For the month of August our conversations on the podcast will help parents transition their families into a new and very different school year.

Christine Duvivier

My guest for today's episode is Christine Duvivier. Christine Duvivier is an international speaker, author and positive change mentor. She speaks, teaches and coaches for organizations, leaders, students and communities that are ready to think beyond traditional myths that hold us back and want to use positive practices to tap into the powerful energy available to them so that they live into more of their true spirits and who they ultimately want to be. She holds an MBA and a Masters degree in Positive Psychology.

Christine and I discuss:

  • The myth of the bad student, the myth of the good student and the myth of the best system and how it's impacting our kids
  • Why our current system of schooling can lead to depression for some students and what we can do about it
  • 7 hidden gifts and how we uncover them
  • Helping our kids become more confident and resilient in school

You can watch the video of our conversation at Facebook.com/StrongHerMe

Quotes from the episode:

"The system is structured in a way and teaches thought patterns that cause depression and anxiety." - Christine Duvivier

"We don't really have any control over what our kids think...what's interesting is how much impact we have." - Christine Duvivier

"I think it's so empowering when you take control as a parent of yourself and decide I'm going to define how I want to think about this (my child and their strengths) and I don't want other people defining it for me. " - Christine Duvivier

workyourplan podcast with evangeline and maria

Our guests for episode 76 of #WorkYourPlan with Kendra are Evangeline Colbert and Maria Mwangi, the co-authors of Conceived by Grace, a 'no fear' pregnancy journal. Maria and Evangeline are hosting their first virtual event this month, Grace - A Virtual Fertility Event. The event is for women who are experiencing infertility/miscarriages/infant loss so that they know they are not alone in the struggle. The event will provide encouragement and tools from God’s Word to help them deal with their fears and anxiety and move forward with a hope-filled focus.

Evangeline Colbert is an author, speaker, and Hope Coach. She is dedicated to helping others find and maintain hope in the midst of their everyday struggles so that they persevere with confidence and live with a hope-filled focus. She's the author of multiple books including a devotional about overcoming infertility, A Seed of Hope: God’s Promises of Fertility. It is written from the perspective of her personal victory over infertility. The devotions help women to tap into the strength of God's promises of fertility and to address the issue of infertility by confidently believing and speaking the Word of God.

Evangeline is dedicated to helping others find and maintain hope in the midst of their everyday struggles so that they persevere with confidence and live with a hope-filled focus. If hope, victory, and meaningful results are what you’re craving, one of her coaching programs can get you there. Her highest goal is to help others live their best life, with courage, purpose, and joy!

Maria’s passion for the event industry went from a hobby and side business, to a career change after the housing crisis of 2008. She is an award-winning event producer who acts as the director of sales for special events at an event company in Phoenix, AZ. She is a widowed mother of two teen boys, who keep her busy with basketball and football. Having become well acquainted with the grief of multiple miscarriages, she recently co-authored Conceived by Grace, a no fear pregnancy journal for women who have suffered from infertility, miscarriage, and infant loss.

Chrystal Evans Hurst is one of my favorite podcaster-speaker-authors. She is anointed to encourage and equip others to live God's best for their lives... all while engaging and being present in the small important moments that matter in the everyday.

Chrystal Evans Hurst

Chrystal Hurst is here to talk about how a 28 day commitment can help us make prayer a habit in our daily lives. In this episode she recommends that in the midst of many voices telling us how to respond to the world’s problems, we seek God in prayer for wisdom and clarity for how we can be most effective. We end the episode with her answering several listener questions about prayer.

This episode is for you if you’ve ever wondered…

  • the role and purpose of prayer as we take action on the vision in our heart
  • how to cultivate your relationship with God through prayer
  • how to wrestle with disappointment through prayer
  • how to make prayer ongoing conversation between you and God

In the month of June we are reclaiming our voices. For this week’s #WorkYourPlan Wednesday I’m taking a step towards one of my action items - to be more informed about local government.

Jessica Davis

Our guest this week is Jessica Davis. Jessica is an 8th grade Civics teacher in Phoenix, AZ who's been teaching middle school for almost 8 years. Her degrees are in American History with a minor in religious studies and a masters in Secondary Education. Jessica loves teaching and sees her classroom as her mission field.

We invited Jessica to help us talk with our teens (and pre-teens) about how we make the political process relevant to our teens. In this candid conversation we will discuss how to engage our kids in the process, how to help them validate fact from fiction on social media and she'll give us a mini lesson on our basic rights as US citizens at the federal and local levels.

Eshe Pickett

We're going to learn why local elections matter and how we become informed voters from my friend, Eshe Pickett, a community activist & an engineer. We will address advocacy, elections and our laws.

In this episode we discuss...

  • Why local elections matter and how we become informed voters
  • How the different elected offices impact our daily life
  • Why we need to start engaging our children early
  • Other ways besides voting to be involved in the political process
  • How do the different branches of government affect economic and racial inequality?
  • Resources to help us navigate the system

Quotes

"Politicians pay attention to people who can vote them out of office." - Eshe Pickett

"There's always got to be some piece of you that's connected to the greater good and when you have no connection and all you're seeing is the negative that's when you have hopelessness. I maintain hope because I'm involved." - Eshe Pickett

For the month of June, in response to our collective grief and outrage over racist acts continuing in our country, on my platforms I'm centering our conversations around reclaiming our voice.

Sharli Berry of Destiny's Door Counseling Center

This week’s #WorkYourPlan conversation with Sharli Berry, a licensed therapist and the owner of Destiny's Door Counseling, about reclaiming your voice after trauma is critical to this conversation.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's quote "protest is the language of the unheard" is quoted frequently right now. We're going to dig into what that means from a mental health perspective. Specifically, we will be talking about how we reclaim our voice after different forms of trauma - childhood abuse and neglect, domestic violence, as well as, the trauma of systemic racism.

In this episode we discuss...

  • What is trauma?
  • What role does our faith play to help us deal with trauma? What role does therapy play?
  • How traumas get triggered
  • How systemic racism triggers us
  • How we reclaim our voice after trauma

Courage always comes with a cost.

For the month of June we’re exploring what courage costs all of us and how courage helps us reclaim our voice for our God-given assignment.

One of the things I pray is reclaimed from our anger and outrage around history continuing to repeat itself is our heart for advocacy.

Khalilah Elliott reclaim voice advocacy

I was joined by my sister, Khalilah Elliott, a multicultural marketing and communications expert, to talk about how we reclaim our voice for advocacy.

Advocacy comes in many forms and that's what Khalilah and I will be talking about.

In this episode we discuss...
▪️Why advocacy matters
▪️Why our silence and inaction is detrimental to us all
▪️How to think critically about issues of social justice
▪️How to address our own anger and resentment in a way that’s not counterproductive
▪️Methods for how we “stop” the madness

No more being silent about the things that matter most to us because we fear what others think.

We talk about how our desire to feel happy all of the time could actually be hurting us and how to manage the disappointment of broken relationships without damaging your self confidence.

Dec 4, 2019

This week is an encore from last year - the secret to finishing strong when you’re tired. This episode was so well received and so relevant I thought I would share it again. It’s a short, practical episode. Stick around until the end, because there’s a homework assignment to prepare you for next week’s year in review episode.

Finishing Strong When You're Tired

The secret to finishing strong is not necessarily pushing harder, but embracing the rest your soul needs. In this episode we discuss:

  • Everything that grows and produces needs times to rest and recover. God has designed us to cycle between effort/work and recovery/rest.
  • When we allow time for rest and recovery, it allows things to grow stronger.
  • How do we allow time for rest when there's still work to be done?
  • How do we slow down the pace of our lives to enjoy the holiday season?

I’ve got some homework for you. Next week’s episode will be our final episode for 2019. We’re talking about our year in review and mentally preparing for a new year with a one word theme.

Your homework is to grab the free Year in Review download at strongher.me/episode65 and start reflecting on your year by conducting your own year in review:

  1. List your 3 most memorable WINS of 2019.
  2. What did you try that you didn’t complete, but you plan to keep working towards in 2020?
  3. What are 1-2 lessons learned in 2019 that will change how you approach 2020?

Thank you for listening if this podcast has helped you mentally break free in some way in 2019, would you leave us a review on Apple podcasts or wherever you listen to this podcast.

Gloria Brintnall #workyourplan podcast

My guest for this episode is Pastor Gloria Brintnall. Gloria has served as an itinerant minister for several years, taking her passionate preaching and teaching of the Word of God throughout America. She's assisted in the planting and establishment of four satellite churches. She is the author of 3 books. Stuff Happens, HOPE Anyway is her most recent book and the one we'll be discussing in this interview.

I want to set the back story of why this interview was important to me. Imagine there is a couple in your church. The couple leads worship at your church. You know there kids because you serve them in the youth dept. They move away because of a call to ministry. They travel the world ministering through song. Years later, they settle into lead a church. Their kids are either young adults at this point or approaching it. They are not a constant in your life, but they are a family that you once knew. Then, one day you learn that the husband has been arrested and sentenced to prison time. This family’s world is flipped upside down. Because you are not close friends, you witness how the mom and her children move forward in their lives from a distance through Facebook. After a decade has passed the wife writes a book sharing how God kept her and her children and restored her through the storm.

Now that you have that insight, one more thing before I share the interview. I’m called to help women heal from the pain of a devastating defining moment and get on with living the good life God has planned for them. What struck me most about Pastor Gloria’s story is how her message of hope shines through in the midst of a devastating, defining moment in her life. It has not marked her with bitterness or even fear about the future. I find that remarkable and I believe you will too.

Nov 11, 2019

I already had an episode planned where I talked to my cousin, an OBGYN about women’s health. I don’t normally talk about pop culture on my podcast but this week I’m making an exception. Why? Because of 2 news stories this month:

  1. Rapper TI takes his daughter to the gynecologist once a year to make sure she’s still a virgin and now
  2. Because of Kanye’s conversion, people are interjecting their beliefs about how his wife should start dressing.

I tend to keep my opinions about controversial things limited to what I share with people who personally know me because for the most part, opinions are opinions and everyone has one. In this case, I think both situations are about control. Control in any relationship, regardless of the circumstance can lead us to dangerous places. Respect isn’t found in control. Control comes from a place of fear.

In the second half of the show I share a conversation that I had with my cousin, Founder and President of the National Birth Equity Collaborative, Dr. Joia Creer Perry. She's a thought leader around racism as a root cause of health inequities, Speaker, Trainer, Advocate, Policy Expert, and fighter for justice. She's the recipient of the Congressional Black Caucus Healthcare Hero’s award and the Maternal Health Task Force at Harvard University Global Visionary Award for Commitment to Advancing Women’s Health.

She is married to Dr. Andre Perry and has three children: Jade, Carlos, and Robeson

Her love is her family; health equity is her passion; maternal and child health are her callings.

She is a wealth information around the history of maternal health in the US and advocacy of black infant and maternal health. We discuss how racism has permeated the quality of care black women receive in this country and the importance of all women, but especially black women, being our own mental and physical health advocates.

October is Breast Cancer, Domestic Violence and Child & Infant Loss Awareness Month. I’ve been personally affected by all of these. I've experienced infant loss through a miscarriage. I've had multiple close family members die of cancer and women I know and love have been subjected to verbal, physical and emotional abuse. So, for October we are addressing themes related to Women's Mental & Physical Health. I want to equip and empower you with mentorship in these crucial areas of your life.

In episode 60 I address our spiritual health. In that episode I share the healing process I went through as a result of a defining moment in my life.

Alisa Keeton Revelation Wellness

Alisa Keeton, the founder and CEO of Revelation Wellness and the author of The Wellness Revelation is our guest mentor for episode 61 of the podcast. Alisa is a 25+ year fitness professional, she believes that the Gospel is a wholistic message of heart, mind, soul, and strength and each body holds a story that must be told. It is then that healing, health, and wholeness can truly begin.

In this episode we discuss grief and the mind-body connection, our thirst for significance, what to do when we feel stuck and how breathing and meditating help us relieve stress in our daily lives.

I have a fun new project I’m hosting starting the first week of November I hope you will join. The Focus.me Project will help go-getter women jumpstart the process of breaking habits that are keeping us busy, stressed out and not effectively reaching our goals. It’s a 5 day challenge with bite-size tasks to complete. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, join our email list by clicking the Focus.me Project link in my profile @kendratillman on IG or the link can be found in our show notes at strongher.me/episode61.

episode 60 healing reconciliation and finishing strong

At this point of the year our hearts and minds can already be in the new year. As we head into the 4th quarter of the year, I want us to ask ourselves how do we finish the year strong mentally, emotionally, physically?

In order to do that we need to decide where we are today. I want to speak directly to those who have taken some leap of faith/a cliff jump/a risk this year or in years past and landed flat on your face.

In this episode, we discuss hospitality in its many forms: washing the feet of the homeless, conversations around race, small groups, in the way we love our families. There will be things you’re probably already doing and things you probably wish you were doing better. “How can I sit with you in what you love and be present?” – Alexa Mason

“…within race, if there’s anything you take from conversations think about Christ and how he laid down the many privileges he had and he had many heavenly holy privileges and you have to do the same and if you aren’t willing to do that from the biblical standpoint of following Jesus…we just won’t get there. You have to have humility to do that.” – Alexa Mason

“Hospitality is the generous serving of others, considering them better than oneself. It incorporates both inviting in and going out, which is why hospitality is a lifestyle not limited to our homes.” – Alexa Mason

Our guest for episode 57 of the podcast is Nikki Boyd. Nikki Boyd is a professional organizer and social media influencer who shares tips on home organization, decor, and DIY projects. She’s also the author of Beautifully Organized: A Guide To Function And Style In Your Home. Traveling the world as a military spouse gave her the opportunity to gain a multitude of knowledge in how to run an efficient home filled with love and memories. Nikki’s philosophy is that your home should not only function for you and your family but should be your beautiful haven. She’s shared her tips in media outlets like Martha Stewart Living, First for Women Magazine, USA, Today Magazine, Ebony Magazine, The Washington Post, and CNN.

Beautifully Organized Home Nikki Boyd

I highly recommend Nikki's book. Her beautiful home is featured throughout the book and I was surprised to learn she doesn’t have a background in interior design. She has some really great insight into how to make an organized home a lifestyle and not an event. She inspired me so much I spent the first half of my labor day organizing my kitchen. I’ve been taking baby steps to implement her recommendations and Morgan’s recommendations from last week’s episode.

In this episode, we discuss how Nikki’s military upbringing influenced her love of home, she answers common questions around how to minimize the overwhelm we feel. This is a very practical episode and I can’t wait for you to listen in.

Her public speaking appearances educate, engage and inspire women to fully step into their power as leaders.

Felicia leads an organization called the Black Women’s Collective. She has a Facebook group that she uses to equip and encourage other women leaders. When she posted a resource she created around helping women combat impostor syndrome I knew I had to have her as a guest on the show.

As you will hear in this episode, circumstances some might view as setbacks (major health challenges and her deeply introverted nature - there's a lot of tips in this episode for those of us with a more introverted nature) Felicia views as opportunities to be maximized for her growth.

Felicia Quotes:

"I learned how to fully leverage my introversion."

"I embrace my own pace."

"Your vibe is going to attract your tribe."

"Confidence is stepping boldly into who you're meant to be."

"Confidence builds when you get feedback."

"You have to have a new relationship with failure...sometimes your growth comes through making mistakes."

"It's not about perfection. It's about creating a space and a container where people feel heard, felt and seen."

"Show up how you want to go up."

My guest for episode 54: Finding Your Voice As A Visionary is Kia Stephens. Kia is a wife and homeschooling mom of two who is passionate about helping women know God as Father. For this reason, she created The Father Swap Blog to help women exchange their father wounds for the love of God the Father. Kia is also the founder of Entrusted Women, which she created to equip Christian women communicators of color. In addition to these ministries, Kia faithfully serves in Bible Study Fellowship and her local church. When she is not writing or serving women, she enjoys spending quality time with her family and friends.
