One of my favorite things to do leading up to the 2018 You Are Stronger Than You Think Women's event is to host the Meet the Mentor series. This series of podcast episodes will give you a taste of the teaching you can expect the day of the event. Meet the Mentor is your confirmation you have signed up for an amazing experience and if you’ve held out to the last minute, it’s your tap on the shoulder to get you, your girlfriends and the teen girls in your life registered.

For the Meet the Mentor series I have recorded my conversations with our 7 dynamic speaker-mentors.

Khalilah Elliott is the Executive Producer and Chief Creative Officer for Kay’s Food for Thought (@kaysfoodforthought) – a lifestyle brand that promotes health and wellness for the mind, body and soul. An engaging public speaker and brand strategist she also recently joined Broadway’s Disney Theatrical Productions as Marketing Director after five years in the same role at the world-famous Apollo Theater in New York City.

In this episode, Khalilah and I talk about the roles of mentors, advisors and sponsors in your career and what it means to take your seat at the table.

Isha Cogborn Headshot

The first conversation I want to share is with Coach Isha Cogborn. Isha is a certified life and corporate coach, entrepreneur, and former Fortune 50 global communicator, she brings all of her experiences to the table –including the clutches of poverty as a teenage mother on welfare. She’s the author of the book, 5 Rules to Win Being You and founder of Startup Life Support – A program for people who need a helping hand overcoming the fear and overwhelm of starting a business. She's also one of my dearest friends and the MC for the 2018 event.

In this episode, Isha and I talk about divine discontent and what to do when you experience it and how to be less busy and more effective and the value of community in living into your purpose.

Nov 10, 2017

As we focus on living a well done life this last quarter of 2017, I realized how we see ourselves often impacts our choices. The quote "To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment" is sometimes painfully true in our generation.

This month I continue the conversation we started with Pat Patterson in episode 17: Your Self Esteem DNA. If you ever struggle with loving your life and loving yourself, episode 17 and today's podcast will help you start moving towards a healthier perspective.

After I heard today's guest, Ginger Ciminello speak at a retreat she hosted, I knew I had to add her to my list of mentor friends. Her passion for scripture and her gift of storytelling make you want to spend more time reading God's word for yourself. Ginger is wise and vulnerable and transparent about a hard season of her life when she kept an eating disorder hidden from friends and family. She also shares how God has taken her love of theater and help her step into her purpose and how that journey has helped heal her identity. This is an episode you don't want to miss. Ginger and I would love to hear your thoughts over on the blog or on social media.

Ginger Ciminello headshot

Ginger Ciminello is a work-from-home mom of two girls, as well as a speaker, writer, and co-owner of With Joy Retreats. Consequently, her house is rarely clean and her hair is almost always in a ponytail. Her book, Forget the Corsage, was written to mentor the young women she's met in auditoriums and classrooms around the country. She has a deep desire to connect with women of all ages and encourage them to laugh, learn from her many mistakes, and connect with the Lord through his Word.

In this episode:

  • Encouragement for days when our choices make us unrecognizable to ourselves
  • How scriptures lift our spirits and our view of God in difficult times
  • How comparison and discontentment hurts our self esteem and how God restores our soul
  • How Ginger's parents nurtured her unique talents

As we focus on living a well done life this last quarter of 2017, I realized how we see ourselves often impacts our choices. The quote "To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment" came to mind as I was interviewing 2 guests for this month's podcast.

During our interview, Patricia Patterson, my first guest on the topic of self esteem, mentioned this idea of a "self esteem DNA". She explains what she means by that in this episode of the StrongHer podcast. I would love to hear your thoughts over on the blog or leave a comment on the post for this podcast episode on Instagram at @strongherme.

Patricia (P.A.) Patterson is an ordained and licensed minister. She is the co-founder (along with her husband, Bill) of Saturation Saturday Ministries with God’s vision to inspirationally and dynamically teach the Word of God in tandem with the move of the Holy Spirit.

In this episode:

  • How years of emotional abuse and bullying influenced her choices and decisions as a young woman
  • A simple strategy she learned from counseling for shifting how she viewed herself, her past and her future
  • How to let go of the need to perform for the approval of others, in order to be happy with your life
  • How following God's leadership when it looks nothing like we would expect leads to a brighter self esteem DNA
  • The power of meditating on scripture to uncover your true identity

"A man's heart plans his way, but the lord directs his steps." Proverbs 16:9

I have a very special guest for this week's episode - my sister, Khalilah Elliott. Khalilah is one of the most bold and unapologetic people I know. She lives her life with courage and that's one of the many things I love about her. Like all of us, she's experienced many ups and downs on her path to purpose. I couldn't think of a better person to talk to about this topic than her. This episode will encourage and inspire you to live your life with gratitude, joy and excitement, even when your path looks different than expected.

In this episode:

  • The benefit of embracing the way God wired you
  • How to shorten the seasons between learning and forgetting
  • Why it's not a selfish desire to seek out your purpose
  • How to increase your capacity on your path to purpose
  • What to do when the path God has you on doesn't look like what you expected

Entrepreunership is one of my absolute favorite topics. For the month of May we are sitting down with 4 enterprising women to learn from their entrepreneurial journey. It's really important for me to showcase everyday women who remind us of what's possible with growth, some grit and a whole lot of God's grace. These 4 women each have a unique spin on entrepreneurship. Some of them work their businesses on the side while working for someone else. Others are full time entrepreneurs or have been in the past. Either way, they have tapped into their unique giftings and found work they love and are being paid for. Your going to love their stories!

Crystal Stine

These week's featured entrepreneur is Crystal Stine. Crystal makes a living as a writer. She encourages women to pursue holy hustle - a work hard, rest well lifestyle that chases faith instead of fame. Mama to a 5-year-old (and married to her high school sweetheart),  Crystal is the author of “Creative Basics: 30 Days to Awesome Social Media Art,” creator of the popular “Clarity Coaching” Course, editor of "Craving Connection" and host of the annual Write 31 Days challenge.

This week's episode is part 2 of a two part conversation I had with Crystal about developing your writing passion right where you are. We get specific about the practice of writing, practical suggestions for working your writing muscle and Crystal shares a little of her journey to her first traditionally published book.

April was Financial Awareness month. Our theme for our April podcast episodes was MONEY!

The 2 financial coaches joining us for April's discussions, Ericka Young and Shehara Smallwood.

Shehara Smallwood

Shehara L. Smallwood is from Columbus, OH and graduated with a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from The Ohio State University.  In 2004, she changed careers  to pursue her passion for helping others with their financial affairs. During her more than 12 year career, she worked with a global financial institution and a national broker dealer firm. In July 2016, she launched her fee-only fiduciary firm called, Your Story Financial, LLC, which allows her to provide unbiased financial advice.

You don't have to be a victim to your past choices or your current circumstances. This episode will remind you that you can learn to be a better a money manager. It's empowering when you realize you do have options, even when your bank balance would say otherwise.

In this episode we discussed the concept of money buckets and why you shouldn't keep all of your money in one bucket. Shehara is great at explaining basic money concepts in plain English. She answers some questions from listeners around how to be more disciplined in handling your finances and what to do if your outflow is greater than your income.

April was Financial Awareness month. Our theme for our April podcast episodes was MONEY!

The 2 financial coaches joining us for April's discussions, Ericka Young and Shehara Smallwood.

Ericka Young

Ericka Young of Tailor-made Budgets is a Dave Ramsey certified budget coach who has helped over 200 families become better money managers. Ericka and her husband Chris know the financial struggles of trying to live the "American dream". After they paid off nearly $100,000 of debt themselves they vowed never to return to that place again and to help other families "change their family tree."

In episode 9 we talked about your money past and the importance of forgiving your family, your spouse and possibly even yourself for past mistakes with money. In episode 10 we talk in detail about how to move from paycheck to paycheck living and how to get on the same page with your spouse about money.

Learning to manage money is a muscle that must be developed. Our kids need time to practice this skill in the home. In this episode Ericka explains how to begin preparing your child from an early age into early adulthood.  Also, did you know where your child chooses to go to college and how they pay for it could impact their financial future greater than any other financial decision they make? Our job is not done when our kids graduate high school. We spend most of this episode discussing the importance of our involvement in our child's college planning, so college doesn't become a long term financial burden to our children or to us. We wrap up the episode discussing the importance of setting boundaries around your finances with adult children.

The Theme for March's Podcasts is The Modern Titus 2 Woman. Titus 2 encourages "older" women to "urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God."

We are wrapping up this March series with a powerful episode! My church's First Lady (aka co-Pastor and Pastor's wife) Min Erica Moore is my special guest. I served under Min Erica's leadership for nearly 8 years on the women's ministry leadership team at Faith Christian Center Phoenix. Min Erica is as wise as she is beautiful and fashionable. She brings a spirit of excellence to everything she does.

She is a Michigan State University graduate and a licensed and ordained minister. In 2008, Min Erica founded the Woman2Woman Women's ministry with
the mission of empowering women to be their best.

It was a pleasure to have this chat with Min Erica and hear Titus 2 principles from her perspective. In this episode she shares the connection between our relationships and the legacy we will leave AND who better to talk about managing  other's expectations than a woman raising 4 children and running a ministry along side her husband? I experienced my own "A-ha" moment, when Min Erica shared the moment that set her free from trying to live a balanced life.

You are in for a treat!

The conversation in this episode centers on lessons Alex has learned about what to look for in a mentor and how to effectively mentor others. We discuss the process she uses to determine what to let go of and what to hold on to and why letting go of good things can be such a big relief. In this week's episode of the StrongHer Podcast, we're sharing the final session from the 2017 You Are Stronger Than You Think Women's Event hosted by Kendra Tillman (@KendraTillman).

Bible teacher and author Ginger Ciminello reminds us that none of what we do amounts to anything if we have lost our desire to know God, intimately, personally, in the midst of our busy lives.  Each of us has a soul. You are the only one charged with the care of your own soul. Hearing the Lord's instruction is not a task that can be delegated to someone else.

In this episode, Ginger explains that less than 20% of Christians read the Bible outside of church. She reveals the #1 reason people don't read their Bible and
provides ideas and instruction for creating space with God.

This rich session reminded us to be hungry for God's holy Word and to know God for ourselves. Her message was honest, convicting and made a difference in the lives of our attendees. We believe it will do the same for you!

Feb 23, 2017

In this week's episode of the StrongHer Podcast, we're sharing Part 2 of the entreprenuerial breakout session, Your Money Makin' Idea, from the 2017 You Are Stronger Than You Think Women's Event hosted by Kendra Tillman (@KendraTillman).

This session and this podcast episode could have been titled, "The things you won't learn about business from following someone's Instagram feed." This ain't the highlight reel. The level of transparency from our business mentors was incredibly refreshing!

Coach Isha Cogborn, founder and President of Epiphany Institute was our guide for this power packed break out session.

In this session you will learn from:

Jane Spicer, CEO of Daphne's Headcovers

Stacey Caron, co-founder and President of Spellbinders Paper Arts & CEO of Stacey Caron Designs

Dr. Nadia Brown, founder and President of Doyenne Leadership

In this episode, we discuss how to handle grief when you're building a thriving business, how to push past the moments when you feel like giving up on your business and how stewarding the gift God has given you blesses those around you.

Our business mentors for the day left us re-energized to live out this calling to lead in business. We believe you will be blessed!
