Dec 4, 2019

This week is an encore from last year - the secret to finishing strong when you’re tired. This episode was so well received and so relevant I thought I would share it again. It’s a short, practical episode. Stick around until the end, because there’s a homework assignment to prepare you for next week’s year in review episode.

Finishing Strong When You're Tired

The secret to finishing strong is not necessarily pushing harder, but embracing the rest your soul needs. In this episode we discuss:

  • Everything that grows and produces needs times to rest and recover. God has designed us to cycle between effort/work and recovery/rest.
  • When we allow time for rest and recovery, it allows things to grow stronger.
  • How do we allow time for rest when there's still work to be done?
  • How do we slow down the pace of our lives to enjoy the holiday season?

I’ve got some homework for you. Next week’s episode will be our final episode for 2019. We’re talking about our year in review and mentally preparing for a new year with a one word theme.

Your homework is to grab the free Year in Review download at strongher.me/episode65 and start reflecting on your year by conducting your own year in review:

  1. List your 3 most memorable WINS of 2019.
  2. What did you try that you didn’t complete, but you plan to keep working towards in 2020?
  3. What are 1-2 lessons learned in 2019 that will change how you approach 2020?

Thank you for listening if this podcast has helped you mentally break free in some way in 2019, would you leave us a review on Apple podcasts or wherever you listen to this podcast.

Gloria Brintnall #workyourplan podcast

My guest for this episode is Pastor Gloria Brintnall. Gloria has served as an itinerant minister for several years, taking her passionate preaching and teaching of the Word of God throughout America. She's assisted in the planting and establishment of four satellite churches. She is the author of 3 books. Stuff Happens, HOPE Anyway is her most recent book and the one we'll be discussing in this interview.

I want to set the back story of why this interview was important to me. Imagine there is a couple in your church. The couple leads worship at your church. You know there kids because you serve them in the youth dept. They move away because of a call to ministry. They travel the world ministering through song. Years later, they settle into lead a church. Their kids are either young adults at this point or approaching it. They are not a constant in your life, but they are a family that you once knew. Then, one day you learn that the husband has been arrested and sentenced to prison time. This family’s world is flipped upside down. Because you are not close friends, you witness how the mom and her children move forward in their lives from a distance through Facebook. After a decade has passed the wife writes a book sharing how God kept her and her children and restored her through the storm.

Now that you have that insight, one more thing before I share the interview. I’m called to help women heal from the pain of a devastating defining moment and get on with living the good life God has planned for them. What struck me most about Pastor Gloria’s story is how her message of hope shines through in the midst of a devastating, defining moment in her life. It has not marked her with bitterness or even fear about the future. I find that remarkable and I believe you will too.

Nov 11, 2019

I already had an episode planned where I talked to my cousin, an OBGYN about women’s health. I don’t normally talk about pop culture on my podcast but this week I’m making an exception. Why? Because of 2 news stories this month:

  1. Rapper TI takes his daughter to the gynecologist once a year to make sure she’s still a virgin and now
  2. Because of Kanye’s conversion, people are interjecting their beliefs about how his wife should start dressing.

I tend to keep my opinions about controversial things limited to what I share with people who personally know me because for the most part, opinions are opinions and everyone has one. In this case, I think both situations are about control. Control in any relationship, regardless of the circumstance can lead us to dangerous places. Respect isn’t found in control. Control comes from a place of fear.

In the second half of the show I share a conversation that I had with my cousin, Founder and President of the National Birth Equity Collaborative, Dr. Joia Creer Perry. She's a thought leader around racism as a root cause of health inequities, Speaker, Trainer, Advocate, Policy Expert, and fighter for justice. She's the recipient of the Congressional Black Caucus Healthcare Hero’s award and the Maternal Health Task Force at Harvard University Global Visionary Award for Commitment to Advancing Women’s Health.

She is married to Dr. Andre Perry and has three children: Jade, Carlos, and Robeson

Her love is her family; health equity is her passion; maternal and child health are her callings.

She is a wealth information around the history of maternal health in the US and advocacy of black infant and maternal health. We discuss how racism has permeated the quality of care black women receive in this country and the importance of all women, but especially black women, being our own mental and physical health advocates.

Oct 23, 2019

October is Breast Cancer, Domestic Violence and Child & Infant Loss Awareness Month. I’ve been personally affected by all of these. I've experienced infant loss through a miscarriage. I've had multiple close family members die of cancer and women I know and love have been subjected to verbal, physical and emotional abuse. So, for October we are addressing themes related to Women's Mental & Physical Health. I want to equip and empower you with mentorship in these crucial areas of your life.

In episode 60 I address our spiritual health. In that episode I share the healing process I went through as a result of a defining moment in my life.

Alisa Keeton Revelation Wellness

Alisa Keeton, the founder and CEO of Revelation Wellness and the author of The Wellness Revelation is our guest mentor for episode 61 of the podcast. Alisa is a 25+ year fitness professional, she believes that the Gospel is a wholistic message of heart, mind, soul, and strength and each body holds a story that must be told. It is then that healing, health, and wholeness can truly begin.

In this episode we discuss grief and the mind-body connection, our thirst for significance, what to do when we feel stuck and how breathing and meditating help us relieve stress in our daily lives.

I have a fun new project I’m hosting starting the first week of November I hope you will join. The Focus.me Project will help go-getter women jumpstart the process of breaking habits that are keeping us busy, stressed out and not effectively reaching our goals. It’s a 5 day challenge with bite-size tasks to complete. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, join our email list by clicking the Focus.me Project link in my profile @kendratillman on IG or the link can be found in our show notes at strongher.me/episode61.

episode 60 healing reconciliation and finishing strong

At this point of the year our hearts and minds can already be in the new year. As we head into the 4th quarter of the year, I want us to ask ourselves how do we finish the year strong mentally, emotionally, physically?

In order to do that we need to decide where we are today. I want to speak directly to those who have taken some leap of faith/a cliff jump/a risk this year or in years past and landed flat on your face.

“How can I sit with you in what you love and be present?” – Alexa Mason

“…within race, if there’s anything you take from conversations think about Christ and how he laid down the many privileges he had and he had many heavenly holy privileges and you have to do the same and if you aren’t willing to do that from the biblical standpoint of following Jesus…we just won’t get there. You have to have humility to do that.” – Alexa Mason

Our guest for episode 57 of the podcast is Nikki Boyd. Nikki Boyd is a professional organizer and social media influencer who shares tips on home organization, decor, and DIY projects. She’s also the author of Beautifully Organized: A Guide To Function And Style In Your Home. Traveling the world as a military spouse gave her the opportunity to gain a multitude of knowledge in how to run an efficient home filled with love and memories. Nikki’s philosophy is that your home should not only function for you and your family but should be your beautiful haven. She’s shared her tips in media outlets like Martha Stewart Living, First for Women Magazine, USA, Today Magazine, Ebony Magazine, The Washington Post, and CNN.

Beautifully Organized Home Nikki Boyd

I highly recommend Nikki's book. Her beautiful home is featured throughout the book and I was surprised to learn she doesn’t have a background in interior design. She has some really great insight into how to make an organized home a lifestyle and not an event. She inspired me so much I spent the first half of my labor day organizing my kitchen. I’ve been taking baby steps to implement her recommendations and Morgan’s recommendations from last week’s episode.

In this episode, we discuss how Nikki’s military upbringing influenced her love of home, she answers common questions around how to minimize the overwhelm we feel. This is a very practical episode and I can’t wait for you to listen in.

Our guest for this BONUS episode is Felicia Davis of The Black Women's Collective.

Impostor Syndrome Felicia Davis

Felicia is a bold, brilliant leader I’ve had the honor of getting to know over the last few years. Felicia started her career as an HR Assistant spending 20+ years in the trenches where she quickly rose up the ranks to become an HR Executive.

Her public speaking appearances educate, engage and inspire women to fully step into their power as leaders.

Felicia leads an organization called the Black Women’s Collective. She has a Facebook group that she uses to equip and encourage other women leaders. When she posted a resource she created around helping women combat impostor syndrome I knew I had to have her as a guest on the show.

As you will hear in this episode, circumstances some might view as setbacks (major health challenges and her deeply introverted nature - there's a lot of tips in this episode for those of us with a more introverted nature) Felicia views as opportunities to be maximized for her growth.

Felicia Quotes:

"I learned how to fully leverage my introversion."

"I embrace my own pace."

"Your vibe is going to attract your tribe."

"Confidence is stepping boldly into who you're meant to be."

In today’s episode I’m talking with 2 dynamic women that I can’t wait for you to meet. They are transparent and wise. They entrusted their stories to me, a woman they didn’t know the week before. We met through the Entrusted Women Facebook Group.

finding your voices as a wife podcast image

My guests are Jessica Collazo & Debra Cheeks.

Jessica is a Chicago native with a heart that beats for Jesus. Her passion is to challenge women to think differently, gain a new perspective and live confidently. Because she knows, it’s possible. Jessica lives in Charlotte, North Carolina with her husband, Jerry, two sons and dog, Sawyer.

Debra Cheek is the wife of John Cheek, and a mom of 7. She is passionate about family, and that passion is most seen in her love for marriages. Her desire to see God's people restore marriage to a place of honor has been channeled and grown through writing, as she published "The Believing Wife" in 2017, and through teaching bible studies, workshops, and seminars. In March of 2017, she founded Believing Wives Bible Study, a ministry designed to teach and train wives to fulfill God's original plan for their lives and in so doing change their homes, communities, and the nation.

In this episode we discussed:

  • The hardest thing about the first 5 years of marriage
  • God’s power to heal marriages even when there’s been adultery
  • Forgiving yourself & your spouse
  • The role of discipleship and accountability in helping your marriage thrive
  • How to respond when you’re husband doesn’t share your faith
  • How do you submit in marriage without losing your voice?

This episode feels like a marriage masterclass. So much to chew on and glean from this discussion.

workyourplan podcast with kendra finding your voice woman

Finding my voice has been about embracing the way I’m wired instead of thinking there was something wrong with me because of my southern accent, because of my acne prone skin, because I would prefer deep conversations to small talk, because I will attempt to read 3 books at once or because I would choose working out with you over chatting over coffee.

I have found my voice in little and small ways over the years. We’re going to use the word VOICE as our acronym for finding our voice:

V: List Your Values - Are they reflected in how you live your life?

O: Outcomes - How do you solve problems?

I: Inventory your strengths

C: Creativity - How do you express yourself?

E: Emotional intelligence

Why does finding your voice matter? How does God help us in this process?

May 8, 2019

I’m Kendra Tillman your host and the founder of StrongHer.Me where we encourage and equip go-getter women act more courageously in their calling as a wife, mom and entrepreneur.

In general, May is a big month for moms. There’s Mother’s day and graduations. High school graduations, specifically, are big days in a mom’s life. I know because our oldest daughter is graduating this month. High school graduation is when our children take a major step in their journey of crossing from childhood into adulthood. Over this school year, I've spent a great deal of time reflecting on my journey with her.

What I know to be true is engaged parenting requires emotional and physical energy. So much learning and impartation has happened, knowingly and unknowingly, in the last 17/18 years of our child's life. It's normal to feel inadequate.

"Did we do enough?"

"Should I have done that differently?"

"Will he/she be ok?"

"What kind of life will they have?"

"Will they seek out a relationship with God, when we aren't around?"

These are some of the nagging questions we all ask as parents and mentors.

At this stage of parenting, it's easier to notice our faults and the do-over moments we wish we could have. I'm here to encourage you, no matter where you are in your mothering journey, God's grace is enough to cover all the ways we wished we had parented better.

Even though I haven't done it perfectly, my heart is filled with gratitude and joy to have had the privilege to mother/mentor another human being for almost 18 years.

In celebration of this new season, everything we publish @StrongHerMe this month is to awaken the promises God gave you years ago (possibly even before you became a parent or mentor) but have possibly gone dormant for various reasons.

One of the ways I stay present in this journey is by setting new goals. For a season of a few years I stopped setting goals, because I hated the feeling of setting a goal and not achieving it. After multiple missed attempts at achieving my goals I started to lose hope that what I imagined was possible. As I've gotten older, I've started to see goal setting differently than I did in early adulthood.

I started setting goals, once I realized the value in goal setting was not in the achievement alone, but in the transformation I experienced in the process.  I now view goal setting as a form of vision casting (in writing). The process helps me to ask myself daily, "what choices will I make, today, that my future self will thank me for later?"

Are you craving a similar shift in your thinking? Are you looking for a fellow mom and go getter to help you develop a plan to live more intentionally? I can equip you with the tools you need to set and achieve your most meaningful goals. This process I've learned over the years is how I've helped a diverse group of women reach their 5Ks, 10Ks and half marathon race goals. It's also helped me organize and execute a transformative yearly women's empowerment event since 2014.

I believe you will see goals as tools you can use to not only strategize, but execute on using our gifts and abilities more effectively. Being specific is important to making progress in your life. Making sure your goals reflect your values is also important. There's one other element you may be overlooking that I want to share with you.

Mark your calendars and join me next Tues, May 14th at 6pm MST for a FREE 45 minute online workshop on this process.

Register today: StrongHerMe #WorkYourPlan Goal Setting Workshop.

Lauren Morgan

LaToya Thompson

LaToya is a professional editor and writer who has guided coaches, entrepreneurs, veterans, moms, corporate professionals, ministers, and soon YOU toward self-publishing a book. Her superpower is getting your book out of your head and onto the page. With 15 years of experience and a couple of degrees under her belt, she helps aspiring authors annihilate procrastination, fear, and excuses by motivating them to write well and write now by just writing.

In this episode we do a deep dive into self publishing: costs to expect and what to invest your money in, should you request reviewers to sign an NDA agreement, copyrighting your book title and we even discuss what do you do if you have a story to tell but writing isn’t your strength? Her response to that question was worth listening to the entire podcast.

Through the StrongHerMe Facebook group I learned that several women in the community are writing books. For the month of April I'm  interviewing women who are making their living within the publishing industry. I originally only planned on interviewing 3 women, but discovered a 4th. They all share a unique perspective. I thought it would be fun to ask a few friends who've written & published books to share their wisdom. Several of them have and I’ll be sharing clips from them on podcast and social media. You will be equipped and encouraged this month. Get your notepads ready. No more excuses! It’s time to start pushing your words out into the world.

Titania Paige

For this week's podcast episode, I talk with Titania Paige. She is a wife and mom of a newborn. She founded her first blog and ministry LifeBeforeEternity.com in August 2016. There, she spurs the modern woman onto enduring faith as she awaits her eternal crown. (James 1:12). On her personal site, TitaniaPaige.com, she helps women embrace passion and purity, so they can live out their God-given purpose. Join her Tuesdays for the latest episode of “The Purpose in Purity Podcast.”

Titania is Liberty University graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Christian Counseling, as well as a First 5 app writer. Download the app, created by Proverbs 31 Ministries, to study God’s word with her during your quiet time.

In this episode we talk about remaining flexible in your calling, the multiple benefits of blogging, how a website freebie became the best product she’s ever made and how she acquired a book agent and her traditional publishing journey.

Welcome back! The 5th Annual You Are Stronger Than You Think Women's Conference was at the beginning of this month.

Here are my 3 big takeaways:

  • One word or idea that came to heart in this planning process was my need for validation. God silenced that doubt.
  • I thought this would be our last year, but I believe we’re just getting started. All that we’ve learned has positioned us for what’s next.
  • My assignment is for the Christian woman in the marketplace.

Our Keynote Speaker was Brandice Daniel, the founder of Harlem's Fashion Row. She shared her journey of growing her company for the last 11 years.

Brandice's definition of a Cliff Jump?

"A cliff jump is taking an action towards your goal despite your qualifications, the fear you feel about how things will turn out, what people will say, your lack of confidence or the doubt you might have about your own worthiness."

(3) Through the StrongHerMe Facebook group I learned that several women in the community are writing books. For the month of April I'm  talking to different women making their living within the publishing industry. I plan to interview an editor, a writing coach and a published author.

I want the interview to reflect your burning questions. What is stopping you from starting or finishing your book? Where are you stuck in your book writing? What do you want to know about self publishing versus traditional publishing?

Today’s episode is apart of the Meet the Mentor series, your introduction to our event’s speaker-mentors. If you caught episode 42 of the podcast, you know I had planned on sharing an episode with Stephanie Clerge our strengths expert, but I didn’t like my energy in the podcast and we don’t have time to re-record it. Stephanie is brilliant and will be co-facilitating 2 very interactive sessions with me at the conference. You don’t want to miss it!

Instead I’m going to end the series a little differently. I was interviewed by Keiona of New GeeChee for her podcast. She’s allowing me to repost that interview here on the podcast. It’s probably the best interview I’ve ever done. Keiona or KeKe is a great interviewer. This interview will give you a great deal of insight into who I am, why I started this event and what you can expect. If you could use some laughter and encouragement in the form a conversation among friends from two different generations, this is the podcast episode for you. I share how the lessons learned in my 20s, 30s and now 40s has shaped me and uncovered the gifts that led me into my purpose!

I share most of the interview, but if you want to hear the interview in its entirety head over to @NewGeeChee Podcast on Apple and Spotify.

As we countdown to the 5th Annual You Are Stronger Than You Think Women’s Conference, we’re kicking off our Meet the Mentor series. The Meet the Mentor series is your introduction to our event’s speaker-mentors. This month I’ll be releasing 2 episodes a week, on Tues & Thurs. 6 different interviews to give you insight into what you can expect if you join us for the conference.

Min Evelyn Gaskin

Today’s episode guest is Min Evelyn Gaskin. Min Evelyn is our closing keynote. Min Evelyn is one of the wisest women I know. Not only is she accomplished... she simplifies leadership development by focusing on four critical areas – Servant Leadership, Courageous Leadership, Ethical Leadership and Effective Leadership. She’s a certified teacher, speaker, coach, published author and college instructor, Evelyn possesses over 30 years of leadership experience, including serving as a division vice president at one of the nation’s largest for-profit universities. She’s also a mom of 3. She’s going to help us balance our work and worship. The big question she’s helping us answer is how do we cultivate our relationship with God while leading others.

Instead of an interview, I share a clip of a sermon she preached in January 2019 on “Hungry for God” Her message was Part 5 in a series that was preached by our Pastor and church staff to help us set the year with God’s will as our priority.
